From Parenthood to Planning: Why Saving for the Future Means More Than Ever
Having a child opens our eyes to an entirely new world.
We begin to see life through a different lens, and our sense of purpose shifts in profound ways. We might become softer, more protective, and more attuned to the world around us—constantly thinking about how we can nurture, guide, and support our children’s growth.
For many parents, this transformation can feel almost instantaneous. The moment we first lay eyes on our newborn, our hearts are full, our thoughts are racing, and we find ourselves imagining their future—first steps, first days of school, graduations, and other important milestones that will shape their lives. We begin to envision all their “firsts” and consider how we can help guide them along the way.
Parenthood is a journey that is difficult to fully explain until we experience it ourselves. Others may offer advice or take steps to prepare us, but it remains unlike any other path we will walk—challenging, meaningful, and deeply rewarding.
Before becoming a parent, my work with the GET 529 Prepaid Tuition Plan was fulfilling, but it felt primarily like a job. I assisted customers in opening GET accounts, answered questions to ease concerns, and guided families through the exciting process of using their 529 funds for their children’s education. I valued those interactions and was always glad to help.
However, becoming a parent has given my work an entirely new meaning. Now, every conversation I have with GET account owners (a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle) carries a deeper sense of connection. There is a shared understanding and warmth—a sense of community in supporting the next generation. It allows me to connect more personally with families as they plan for future education experiences I also hope to share with my own child.
One of the most challenging aspects of parenthood is the uncertainty. While we can protect and guide our children, we cannot determine their paths, interests, or who they will ultimately become. What we can do is help them prepare for their futures, reduce barriers where possible, and encourage them to pursue their dreams as they grow into adulthood.
529 savings programs like Washington’s GET Prepaid Tuition plan and WA529 Invest, offer an added layer of reassurance in that journey. Saving for our children’s future can feel overwhelming at times, and it is natural to wonder whether we are doing enough. But one day, when our children begin their first college class or start learning a trade, they will feel the care and intention behind those efforts.
Ultimately, it is not the exact amount saved that matters most—it is the commitment, the preparation, and the love behind it. These are things that help our children feel supported, confident, and ready to step into the world as young adults.
